Today marks the 37th anniversary of the episcopal consecrations performed by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre for the Society of St. Pius X on June 30, 1988. I have re-opened the comments section under my article “Collegiality and the Canonical Situation of the SSPX,” originally posted on September 5, 2022, as the issues I raised at the time are still relevant today. The error of collegiality blurs the distinction between the power of orders and the power of jurisdiction and serves—in a contradictory way—to simultaneously promote false ecumenism with schismatics while alienating non-schismatics such as the SSPX.
